Your Moving Checklist

Every family’s journey is unique. This checklist is designed as a collaborative resource to guide you and your parents through moving. This transition may involve mixed emotions, so we encourage open communication and respect for your parents’ preferences throughout the process.

Choose Location & Amenities

Finding the perfect community for your parents can take a bit of research.

Consider what matters most to them, such as proximity to family, access to green spaces, or specific amenities like a fitness center or library.

Touring different communities can help you find a place that aligns with their preferences and feels like home.

Organize Financial & Legal Matters

Moving to assisted living may require updating some legal and financial information.

Discuss long-term care financing options with your parents and a financial advisor, if needed. This can also be a good time to update estate planning documents (like wills and power of attorney) to make sure everything is covered and in order.

Collect Medical Records

Gather and transfer your parents’ necessary medical records to the assisted living community.

Schedule introductions with the on-site medical staff (if applicable) and communicate any ongoing medical needs or medications. These steps are necessary for a smooth transition of care and your parents’ well-being.

Gather the Essentials

Before packing, create a list of all of your parents’ essential items that they will need in assisted living. These can include medications, glasses, hearing aids, dentures, and other medical equipment they use daily. Make sure these items are packed separately and are easily accessible during the move.

Declutter & Pack

Downsizing is often necessary when moving to assisted living. Go through each room and help your parents determine which items they want to keep, donate, sell, or throw away.

Be compassionate during this process, as it can be difficult to let go of sentimental items. Consider hiring a professional organizer or enlisting the help of family and friends to make this process smoother.

Hire a Moving Company

Consider hiring a moving company that specializes in moving seniors. These companies offer various services, including truck packing, loading, and unloading. They can also provide special accommodations like moving oversized items like sofas, chairs, and other furniture.

Transfer Services

Many services may be taken care of in your parents’ new community. However, it’s still a good idea to confirm what’s included and what needs to be transferred or set up before move-in day.  Here are some common services to consider:

  • Utilities: Contact your current providers to arrange the transfer or termination of services at your parents’ old residence. You may also need to establish new utility accounts for their new home in the assisted living community.
  • Mail: Set up mail forwarding with the post office to ensure your parents’ mail continues to reach them.
  • Cable and Internet providers: Decide if your parents want to keep their current cable or internet service at their new residence. If so, contact the provider to transfer service or inquire about new resident deals.

Make the New Place Feel Like Home

Help your parents personalize their new apartment with familiar items and cherished keepsakes.  This will help them feel settled and comfortable in their new surroundings.
